Lontar leaves have long been used as book pages. The leaves are dried and pressed and inscribed with balinese characters. The lontar palm provides the raw material for everyday articles. Here the leaves are woven to collect sap from a lontar palm.

The trunk is used for firewood and timber, the fruit for eating and the production of an alcoholic beverage, and the sap for sugar.
