ecoBali was founded in 2005 by a group of people, living in Bali and having professional background in environmental issues, that recognized the urgency of taking action in regard to waste management problems in the island.
Improper disposal of solid waste continues to be a serious issue in Bali with an increasing amount of plastics, paper, metal, glass etc. being discarded daily and tons of garbage thrown over walls and into rivers or ,in the best of cases, in main dumping sites. Although some collection of recyclables is carried out by the informal sector (scavengers and various dealers) they are mostly interested only in a selective collection of the most valuable items.
Almost all the waste we produce could be recycled or composted if properly disposed.
ecoBali first initiative has been to establish a collection service available for households, schools, factories and other types of businesses in order to collect recyclables and dispose of it responsibly. The main goal of this initiative is to promote waste separation at source as well as increase awareness in regard to Solid Waste Management issues.
Waste separation at source is the main answer in order to:
- Reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill (limiting environmental consequences).
- Ensure that all recyclables can be properly and effectively processed, transformed and reintroduced in the production line, contributing to reduction of the amount of energy and row materials needed in producing new items.
Example of waste reduction if practicing waste separation and recycling:
Household: 50-70% depending on social status
Hotels: 30-40% depending on departments (offices can go up to 90%)
ecoBali is collaborating with Waste Recovery centers such as “Jimbaran Lestari” where recyclables are further separated, according to categories, and sent to various distributors to reach recycling plants, mostly in east Java. The residue then sent to dumping sites (TPA) is minimum (less than 20%).
ecoBali is servicing at the moment more than 200 households, several villa complexes, schools, some factories and various businesses.
We collect monthly around 2-2.5 tons of dry waste
ecoBali also provides training in composting for households and small businesses.
ecoBali is active in establishing links with producers and the recycling industry in order to increase awareness of latest available technologies among stakeholders and maximize the recycling of various items (e.g. beverage cartons)
ecoBali is currently developing educational projects in collaboration with Tetra Pak Indonesia to promote waste separation at source in schools while disseminating environmental awareness and education regarding waste disposal and recycling.
ecoBali also is developing collaborations with Banjars in order to establish community managed solid waste micro projects.
